Frozen Ball Pit

The chair preserves a playful moment of memory by providing a (surprisingly) comfortable resting place inspired by a classic ball pit. What doesn’t immediately meet the eye with this work is the computer modeling that went into its creation. I took a 3D scan of a plastic lounge chair, and then used Grasshopper/Rhino to map the locations of each ball to the surface, making sure that the gaps between all balls would be uniform. I then printed a physical copy of that map that I glued to the original chair to place a nut at the precise location of each ball. All subsequent connection points to surrounding nuts (~800 individual rods) were welded on the front and back sides.
